Cuvée L'Inconnu 2013 Blanc de Blancs
Winemaking Notes: Cuvée L'Inconnu (meaning the unknown) is made from a single vintage, single vineyard, single block in the traditional Méthode Champenoise. It was harvested in the foggy, early morning hours from our Wente Block, and is 100% Chardonnay. Lightly pressed with stems in our vintage Coquard press, to stainless steel tank, it fermented there, then the juice was racked to a 2nd tank where it rested 9 months. April 2014, we put it through its secondary fermentation and capped it. It rested on the lees for 4 years. In late Spring 2018, the sparkling wine was disgorged, topped off with the same vintage sans dosage (no sugar added), then corked, caged, labeled & foiled in our cellar in Santa Barbara. The flavor profile of the wine reflects where the vines are anchored, in silty, chalky soil on the cool banks of the Santa Ynez River. It's loaded with citrus notes balanced by minerality. The extended time on the lees gives a nice mid-palate weight and complexity. The finish is clean, fresh and focussed. Authentic, climate driven wine with no manipulation.

Vinous Review: 93+ Points
The 2013 Blanc de Blancs is a wine of real personality and class, not to mention one of the very Santa Barbara sparkling wines that is truly distinctive. Brisk and saline, the Wenzlau also has the mid-palate depth that so many other sparkling wines lack. There are so many layers that unfold in the glass; deep varietal character and the natural power of this site as expressed through fruit that was picked early for sparkling wine. I find the 2013 fascinating on so many levels, the most important being how it really opens a window as to what might be possible with sparkling wine in Santa Barbara. This is a stellar wine from Wenzlau. Ideal Drinking Window: 2020-2031
